Somatic Experiencing
Surviving
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapy approach that was developed by Peter Levine to treat trauma. Based on the innate survival instincts that are hardwired into the human body, SE recognizes that within all of us there is the impulse to run, fight, or immobilize ourselves in the face of danger.
You know the feeling of this – your survival system comes online when you experience something scary, overwhelming, or threatening to your well-being. You become more alert, your heart pounds, and a surge of energy courses through you. Your vision narrows and your body reacts without thought or intention.
Regulating
Following this experience, it takes time for your body and mind to process what you went through. There is a specific sequence that your survival system follows to relax, releasing energy, and calming the mind. When this sequence is not allowed to move through your body, it becomes stuck, leaving your survival system “on.”
When things start to fall apart.
When your survival system is left “on,” you continue to exist as if there is a constant threat, triggering heightened alertness and focus. You avoid things that feel overwhelming or overstimulating and fight a constant state of exhaustion. You disconnect from your body and from others, and you withdraw from your life.
Getting back to your normal.
SE focuses on the stuck survival system.
Together, I work with you to integrate your mind and body experience, helping you to process experiences with more clarity. We work with your survival system, helping it to turn “off” and find ways for you to expand and connect in your life.
It is time to believe you can have a life where your thoughts and actions are not dictated by what you have experienced.
